The St. Philip’s College Science and Math Summer Academy (SAMSA) received the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

SAMSA is offered through the St. Philip’s College Center of Excellence for Science. The program provides eleven to fifteen-year-old children hands-on activities inside and outside the classroom and virtual field trips to STEM sites that engage students through informal learning. The academy focuses on topics within high-wage, high-demand careers and features STEM professionals virtually as mentors.

The Center of Excellence for Science, in collaboration with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), recieved the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant last August. The grant will award up to $236,429 in funding over five years to SAMSA and the Space Robotics summer programs offered to 100 SAISD youth annually. SAMSA 2022 was held June 13 – 30 at Southwest Campus.

St. Philip’s College will be featured, along with 78 other recipients, in the September 2022 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. For more information about the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award and INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, visit insightintodiversity.com.
